Artist biography
Gerardo Bravo was born in Mexico City and lives between Washington, D.C., and his hometown. Interdisciplinary artist, his work explores power dynamics, delving into existence, memory, and grief to establish parallels between humans and ecology. His artistic practice operates at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and installation, functioning as a unified whole through his interventions in space. Bravo’s work emanates a sense of introspection and solemnity, inviting viewers to reflect on power structures, the fragility of existence, and the persistence of memory. In this way, his work serves as a bridge between past and present.
Bravo began his career as a painter in 1996 with his first solo exhibition, Voices of the Spirit, in Oaxaca, Mexico. By 2003, the Mexican government had already exhibited his work in Ottawa, Miami, and San Francisco. He presented his first installation, Offerings to My Mother, at the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City in 2007, followed by the installation Offerings to 72 Migrants at the Azcapotzalco Regional Museum in 2010. In 2014, he began developing his ceramic sculpture practice.
Bravo’s work has been exhibited at institutions including the Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City, the Cultural Institutes of Mexico in Ottawa, San Francisco, and Miami, and the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art (as part of the VIII Rufino Tamayo Biennial). His pieces are held in public and private collections such as the World Bank in Washington, D.C., the Mexican Embassy in Berlin, the Museum of Oaxacan Painters, the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, and the International Bank of Miami.
